Haru-Chan Nendoroid Review

Haru-Chan-Nendoroid-on-Koi

I bought the Haru-Chan Nendoroid solely because of how adorable she is. She is apparently a mascot for Japan’s NHK General Newswatch 9 and stars in her own webcomic on NHK ONLINE called Haru-Chan’s Weather Trivia.

Haru-Chan is the goddess of spring and all of her accessories fit the theme. You can check out her website on NHK ONLINE here. It’s all in Japanese, but there is a video that explains some things in English… for some reason.

She comes with a giant koi that she can ride, three faces, different lower body pieces for sitting and standing, a cute little cat, an extra hair piece, and three different wands. The kanji on the top of her head says “Haru,” which means “Spring.”

The pictures online showed the cat holding onto the back of the fish, which was one of the main reasons I wanted this figure. While it can technically be posed this way, it’s a bit difficult to get the cat to stay on. There are no pegs or anything to keep him attached to the fish. Instead, his front legs just squeeze the fish’s tail and you have to set him on the back of the fish just right to get him to stay. Even if you get him on, he usually falls off eventually.

Other than the issues with the cat staying on the fish, the only problem I have with this figure is that the standing lower body piece doesn’t stay on very well. It’s too loose and separates from the upper body piece too easily. The sitting lower body piece doesn’t have this issue, however. I prefer displaying her sitting on the fish anyway.

It might seem silly for an American to buy a figure based on something from a random Japanese news channel, but just look at her! You know you want to add her to your collection! I’m keeping her on my desk right now, right next to Madoka. They look so cute together!

Overall, Haru-Chan is one of the cutest Nendoroids I have. I plan on keeping her on my desk all winter to remind me that spring will be here soon!

Puella Magi Madoka Magica Nendoroid Review

Puella Magi Madoka Magica Nendoroid

I bought the Nendoroid of Madoka in her magical girl outfit after finally watching the series. This Nendoroid is super cute and comes with plenty of accessories and extra pieces.

One of the best things about this figure is that she comes with Kyubey, who has two bodies to chose from. He can be posed sitting or hanging from Madoka’s arm. She also has three different faces, an extra set of hair bows with longer ribbons, and her bow and arrow.

Madoka Nendoroid - Good Smile

I do have a couple issues with this Nendoroid. When I took her out of the box, I noticed that some of the parts felt kind of sticky and she had a plasticy smell. At first I was afraid that she might be a bootleg, but I found out that some Nendoroids have a problem with stickiness , particularly older ones that have been kept inside the packaging for too long.

Apparently they add a plasticizer to the PVC to make Nendoroids softer and more flexible. If you keep them sealed in the box, especially if they are stored in a hot environment, the plasticizer evaporates and leaves a sticky residue on the figures. You can apparently clean them with dish soap to remove the stickiness, but I want to make sure I’m using a soap that won’t damage the paint on the figure before I attempt it.

Kyubey and Madoka Nendoroid

The other minor issue is that her hand comes loose sometimes and falls off when I try to pose her. I believe this figure is an older design, which could explain both the problems with stickiness and loose connectors. I think newer Nendoroids have tighter connectors so they don’t come apart as easily.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica Nendoroid

Overall, I’m glad I got the Madoka Nendoroid Figure. She is super cute and looks great on my pink desk with the rest of my pink action figures.

There are several other Nendoroids of Madoka as well, including her in her schoolgirl uniform and Nendoroids of other characters in the series, such as Homura. I may get one or two more Puella Magi Madoka Magica Nendoroids in the future.

Dragon’s Crown Elf Cosplay and Midoricon 2013

Dragon's Crown Elf Cosplay

Midoricon was a couple weeks ago, and my boyfriend and I decided to go in Dragon’s Crown cosplay. We just finished our costumes the day before the convention. I was the Elf and he was the Wizard.

I didn’t get any pictures of my costume before I got tired of my wig and took it off. It started getting messed up under my hood and it was too hot outside for wigs, so I stopped wearing it halfway through Saturday and just braided my actual hair. Plus, my elf ears didn’t really work with the hood up and the wig on, and I wanted to wear my elf ears at some point during the convention. I didn’t get any pictures of my boyfriend as the Wizard either, because he wants to improve some things on his costume as well (his wig ended up looking completely different from the picture on Amazon, so he stopped wearing his too).

Here’s some pictures of me as a brown-haired version of the Elf. We’re probably going to do these costumes again sometime if we can get better wigs.

chainmail-midoriconMidoricon was pretty awesome overall. There was live-action Mario Kart (which unfortunately filled up before we could register to compete, but we still got to see it) with a crazy banana running around. There were also some outdoor panels, which we didn’t really check out. I did learn how to make chain-mail at a chain-mail panel that Link was presenting, which was pretty awesome! We only had time to make a small bit of chain-mail at the panel, but Link let everyone take home a cup of chain links to make more later.

This was Midoricon’s second year. Last year we just went for one day since we had just gotten back from Matsuricon. We chose Midoricon over Matsuricon this year, since last year Midoricon was better, even though Matsuricon is bigger. (In the con world, bigger isn’t always bigger, which we learned from Ohayocon this year, which was overcrowded to the point of not being enjoyable and I can’t even remember what panels or events were there. Even though it was the biggest con I’ve been to, it was also the least memorable.)

Anyway, aside from some immature idiots pulling the fire alarm repeatedly (I doubt this con will be invited back to Shawnee State Park Lodge next year), and several of the employees treating us like we’re a bunch of weirdos for wearing costumes, Midoricon was definitely one of the best cons I’ve been to.

The only things I’d like to see next year are more vendors and an actual gaming room. They only had tabletop gaming, which I’m not really into.

Anyway, I recommend Midoricon for anyone in the Ohio area who enjoys going to conventions, especially if you’re tired of the bigger, more crowded conventions. It’s more laid back than other cons, and even though it’s small, there is still plenty to do.

Elfen Lied in Animal Crossing: New Leaf

Animal Crossing: New Leaf Elfen Lied Lucy cosplay

With Animal Crossing: New Leaf, you can cosplay any time you want, without spending any money to make your costume. Here’s my character dressed as Lucy from Elfen Lied:

I designed the dress in the Able Sisters’ shop and paired it with appropriate shoes and leggings from Kicks. I’m still waiting to see if there is a purple hair bow or a white cat ear headband to finish the cosplay outfit.

If you would like to cosplay as Lucy in Animal Crossing: New Leaf, feel free to use the QR codes for my outfit:

I’ve also made my town tune Lilium (or at least as close to the song as I could within the limitations of the game).

Feel free to use this tune for your town if you’d like.

If you have the Dream Suite, you can also check out a dream version of Dinotown to get my other designs (or to trample my flowers and hit my animal villagers with a net).

I will also be posting other fun designs here and on the facebook page for my gaming blog, 8BitBites.com. We will also be starting an Animal Crossing: New Leaf cosplay contest on 8BitBites soon. Check the site and FaceBook page for details later this week. You could have your original costumes displayed on the site!

Elfen Lied Cosplay: Lucy’s Horns

I just finished making Lucy’s horns for my cosplay costume. The horns are made of Sculpey III oven bake clay.

I originally made a set of horns out of some scraps of 5mm Foamies sheets I had left over from my Skyrim Iron Helmet, but I decided to remake them out of Sculpey clay so they would be thicker, harder, and more bone-like (and less cat ear like, though I’m sure the artist of the series intended them to look similar to cat ears). The original horns I made ended up being shaped more like her horns in some parts of the manga than her anime horns (they seem inconsistent in the manga), which I guess would have been okay since my wig is more the color of her hair on the manga cover than in the anime.

Lucy's horns on a headband

I sculpted the horns into a vaguely cat ear triangular shape with ridges around the edges and baked them. Then I painted them with vintage white acrylic paint. Once the paint was dry, I coated them in Sculpey Gloss Glaze. They might not have needed the gloss, but I thought it would make them more durable, since online reviews I’ve read say that Sculpey III breaks more easily than other types of Sculpey clay. (I’m still using up the Sculpey left over from when I was a teenager before I buy more).

Lucy's hornsI was having a difficult time getting the horns to stick directly to the headband, so I cut thin strips of 2mm Foamies sheets and superglued them between the horns and the headband. I glued the horns too high on the headband and first, so I had to pull them off and cut new strips of Foamies. If you’re planning to do a similar costume, make sure you try on the headband and mark where you need to glue the horns before going crazy with the super glue!

I write another post once I figure out how to keep my wig on better, and how to better hide the headband under the hair.

I Didn’t Die

With the new year, I’m actually going to attempt to start posting occasionally. I know, I said that last year, and I this year will probably end up about the same.

I got a new job a couple months ago, which is partially why I’ve been too busy to keep this blog updated. I also haven’t done much that would be relevant enough to this blog to post about.

The last anime convention I was at was Midoricon (where I wore the same costume I made for Matsuricon, which is why I never got around to posting about it), but I will be going to Ohayocon in a couple weeks. With the holidays, my boyfriend and I both forgot about the con until someone at a New Years party asked if we would be there. I’m tired of my Skyrim costume since I wore it for two cons, a cosplay picnic, and Halloween, but I am attempting to put together a new cosplay for Ohayocon.

This will be the first anime con where I’m cosplaying an actual anime character! I will be Lucy from Elfen Lied (Hans will be Kohta, or as I like to call him “generic anime dude”). Since the outfit is so basic, and since I waited until the last minute, I’ve just ordered everything I needed for my costume from Amazon and eBay (except the horns, which I’m making). It was cheaper to put together a “closet cosplay” of the outfit I wanted than to buy a pre-made costume online that barely even looks like Lucy’s outfit in the anime (there are some awful looking costumes available to purchase out there!).

In other news, I’ve decided to actually learn guitar. Maybe in a few years, I’ll be good enough to post videos here. (Probably not…)

Well, that’s about all I have to post about right now. Check back later for updates on my costume (I’ll tell you how I made Lucy’s horns, and if all goes well once I get my pink wig, how to wear a wig over long hair without having to use a wig cap).

PS: What do you want to read about in my blog? More cosplay stuff? Reviews and rants about video games and anime? Cool stories about my life that you really shouldn’t care about anyway? I’ll try to include tips for other cosplayers in those posts to at least give this blog some kind of value, but I can really only do a couple costumes a year.
