Pumpkaboo and Gourgeist Plush

Pumpkaboo and Gourgeist

Instead of carving a pumpkin this year for Halloween, I made my own Pumpkaboo and Gourgeist plushies. I made these guys back in October, just before Halloween. I just wanted a Pumpkaboo doll, and thought it would be more fun (and cheaper, since I already had all the fabric I needed) to make my own than to buy the pre-made one they sell online.

I made Pumpkaboo, and then decided that he needed a Gourgeist friend, so I made his evolution too. It took one day to make Pumpkaboo, and I think two days for Gourgeist. I started Gourgeist right after I finished Pumpkaboo though.

I made them using fabric I had left over from various cosplay costumes. Their mouths are both hand-embroidered and they have buttons for eyes. Pumpkaboo’s lights are also giant buttons. I was originally going to use yellow fabric, but I thought the big buttons would be cuter.

I made the patterns myself as I went along, which is usually how sewing projects go for me. I’m not sure I’ve ever had a totally complete pattern ready to go before I’ve started to sew. Sometimes I think of a better way to make a later part while working on a different part. That’s probably not how people who actually know what they’re doing go about sewing…

Sylveon Cosplay

Jen's Sylveon Cosplay

Wow, I’m behind on updating my blog. Anyway, I had so much fun doing the live action Pokemon events for Midoricon that I wanted to do another Pokemon cosplay of one of my favorite new Pokemon. I got this Sylveon cosplay finished just in time for NyanCon. I was going for a kind of lolita type of look for Sylveon. I even got an Eevee in the vendor room to complete my outfit!

I have a tail too, which you can’t see in the pictures. I put a wire inside it to keep it from drooping too much. Also, I realize that the head bow is on the wrong side here. Mirrors are confusing!

I wore this cosplay for NyanCon and for halloween at The Side Quest in Lakewood. I’m planing on wearing it for Shinbokucon too, if go.

Tomodachi Life: Pokemon QR Codes

Tomodachi Life Pokemon

To celebrate the recent release of Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, I’d like to share some of my Pokemon-inspired characters for Tomodachi life. Here are QR codes for Misty, and three Pokemon; Jynx, Makuhita, and Pancham.

They are all set as adults and all female. The male:female ratio in my game skews toward male, so I wanted to try to balance it out more. I needed more females so more of my miis have a chance to get married, and more really strange looking characters to have a better chance of getting strange looking baby miis to send out on Streetpass, which is why I decided to make Pokemon to begin with.

Makuhita may or may not have the “real name” Taylor Swift. I also may or may not sent out Hariyamas and Makuhitas on wonder trade named Taylor Swift on occassion.

I don’t know why I name those Pokemon Taylor Swift. I have nothing against her. It just seemed like a funny idea one time when I was playing Pokemon X late at night.

Anyway, enjoy these Pokemon Miis for Tomodachi Life.

Miiverse Monster Mansion – Pokemon Art Academy Drawing Contest

Sylveon and Pumpkaboo

My drawing of Sylveon with Pumpkaboo was chosen as one of the winners for the Pokemon Art Academy drawing contest in the Miiverse Monster Mansion community on Miiverse!

I’m really enjoying Pokemon Art Academy. I don’t feel like I’m that great of an artist, but the lessons are helpful, and I think I’m getting better at drawing from it. The Miiverse community is welcoming to artists of all skill-levels and ages.

Bellossom Cosplay

Bellossom Cosplay with Oddish Plushie

I haven’t had time to make a new cosplay in quite a while, but I just finished a Bellossom cosplay for Midoricon. They are doing Live Action Pokemon Snap this year, and I wanted to be a part of it. Bellossom was always one of my favorite Pokemon from Pokemon Gold and Silver. As lame as it might sound, Bellossom was one of the new Pokemon I was most excited about for that generation. I remember seeing a picture of it in a magazine before the games came out, and thinking it was super cute. I even made my own plush doll of Bellossom (it didn’t turn out too great – I was a kid! I’ll see if I can find it at my parents’ house sometime). Plus the hula-dancer inspired Bellossom seemed like the perfect Pokemon to cosplay as at a beach convention!

I the flowers are stuffed with Poly-Fil stuffing to make them poofier. I used a stiff red fabric I found in the remnants bin. I couldn’t think of a good way to make the yellow center part, until I was looking around JoAnn’s and saw the big yellow buttons. I thought they were just perfect! For the skirt, I made eight big leaf shapes – four green and four yellow, and sewed them together. There’s a little bit of elastic inside to keep it more secured. I just bought a green tank top because I’m lazy.

I also made an Oddish plushie to go with my costume. I actually made him before I started my cosplay to test out my new sewing machine. He’s made from left over fabric from two other costumes. I used a pattern for a round ball I found on image search, and just used the exact same pattern to make the leaves (as I said early, I’m lazy). I’m going to carry him around with me at Midoricon.

I just have one more thing to finish making for my costume: a leaf shaped bag to keep my phone, wallet, and 3DS in. I ordered a pair of green a yellow shorts to wear under my skirt specifically because they had pockets. It turns out, however, that like most clothing designed for women, the pockets are too small for even an iPhone. I think I’m about to start making all of my own clothes so that I can at least have decent pockets!

Anyway, if you see me walking around at Midoricon, please say “hi!” I’ll be there with my boyfriend, who’s going as Lucario. I hope to meet lots of other Pokemon there!

First Impression of Pokemon X and Y

Swirlix - Adorable Fairy Type Pokemon

It’s only been two days since Pokemon X and Y were released, but it’s probably already my favorite game in the series (I got Pokemon X, my boyfriend got Y). While staying true to the previous iterations of the series, there are enough new features and changes to give long time fans the same sense of wonder and discovery that they got the first time they set foot in the Kanto region all those years ago.

There seems to be way more different types of wild Pokemon in Kalos than in previous regions. I’ve only earned one gym badge so far (after spending 16 hours in the game already!), and have already had run-ins with 91 different types of Pokemon. There is a nice mixture of brand new Pokemon and Pokemon introduced in previous games (I’m always super excited when I encounter a gen 1 Pokemon in the wild). The sheer amount of Pokemon can be almost overwhelming since there is no way to give each Pokemon captured the attention they deserve, but it also makes the newly implemented online features more engaging and fun. If there were fewer types of Pokemon, new features such as Wonder Trade wouldn’t be very fun at all.

Sylveon - Adorable Fairy-type EeveelutionAt first, I thought the Wonder Trade feature would be lame, since of course most people are going to be trading level 3 Pidgey and Bunnelby, but I’ve already gotten enough cool trades to make the feature well worth using. I got a Riolu, or rather リオル, as he is called since he was originally caught by a Japanese trainer. I was super excited when I got him. That is, until a couple hours later when I got my adorable little イーブイ (Eevee) from another trainer in Japan. Not only was it exciting just to have an Eevee in my party, it was also exciting to know that Eevees are apparently common enough in Kalos that I will be able to easily acquire more (since no one is going to be trading something that they can only get one of). I hope to get enough Eevees to have one of each Eeveelution. I can’t decide if I want a Vaporeon or a Sylveon first! Even when you get something lame in Wonder Trade, it is easy to simply trade it again until you end up with something Awesome.

It’s also fun to see all of the different places where other Pokemon Trainers live. My first Wonder Trade partner was someone from the Cayman Islands. I’ve also met a lot of people from Japan, and quite a few from Chile, France, South Korea, Canada, and various other places. Normally when I play games online, everyone I run into is either from the US or Japan.

Fennekin Pokemon X and Y starterAside from Wonder Trade, trading and battling with friends is now even easier than ever. You don’t have to stop what you’re doing, run to the Pokemon Center, and change out your party Pokemon before connecting with your friend anymore. You simply click on their face on the PSS and go from there. I especially like the fact that you can choose any Pokemon from your computer storage boxes. It makes it convenient to trade as soon as you catch a Pokemon for your friend.

It’s also way easier to level up your Pokemon now, via the experience share item you get early in the game. Now you don’t ever have to send your Caterpie or Weedle into battle to get a Butterfree or Beedrill. The only downside is that my Braixen, Mozilla, is almost level 30 and I haven’t gotten my Cliff Badge yet. He might have to go into storage for a while until I need him again.

Anyway, Pokemon X and Y are pretty awesome so far. My only big complaint is that the over world isn’t in 3D. I was looking forward to an entirely 3D Pokemon game since the 3DS first game out, so it was pretty disappointing when I noticed the 3D turned off after the opening sequence. The battles and inside of caves are still in 3D though, so at least it does use the 3D capabilities somewhat.

Blue Flower FlabebeThe only other small complaint I had was that it wouldn’t let me name my blue Flabébé “Violet,” since apparently “viol” means something offensive in French. I understand that they don’t want people giving Pokemon offensive names and then trading them to children, but come on. Violet is a perfectly nice name for a Pokemon that looks like a flower. I settled on naming it “Lily” instead.

That’s it for now. There are still a lot of features that I haven’t fully explored yet in Pokemon X. If you want to add me to trade or battle, my friend code is 4596-9463-6149. Please comment with your friend code or send me a message on Facebook (my FaceBook link is on the top of my blog’s sidebar) if you’d like to be my 3DS friend!
