Santa’s Arctic Escape!

Santa's Arctic Escape

Santa’s sleigh crashed in Antarctica (darn Apple maps!). He must find his sleigh so he can deliver his gifts to all the good girls and boys on Christmas Eve. Help Santa find his sleigh and escape from the frozen tundra!

There are many arctic creatures who don’t possess the spirit of Christmas and want to harm Santa. Be careful not to be attacked.

Santa’s Arctic Escape was the 9th and final game I made in Intro to Game Design last semester. I thought it was appropriate to make a Christmas-themed game just before the holidays.

This game was based on the Pyramid Panic tutorial in The Game Maker’s Apprentice.

Beach Tic-Tac-Toe

Beach Tic-Tac-Toe

The 8th game I made in Intro to Game Design was this simple tic-tac-toe game. It was just to learn the basics of scripting. I used summery beach-themed graphics because I’m already tired of this cold weather. I’m sure most other people living in Ohio agree with that sentiment.

There isn’t really much else to say; it’s tic-tac-toe. Get three pairs of your sandals in a row before the computer.

I made it following a tutorial in The Game Maker’s Apprentice, as with the rest of the games I made for that class.

Beach Tic-Tac-Toe has something for everyone! A girl in a bikini for the guys and shoes for the ladies.
Okay, that was mildly offensive. Ignore that comment.

Garden Wars

Garden Wars

Garden Wars was the 7th game I made in Intro to Game Design. It is about two flowers who are warring over control of a garden. Ridiculous concept, I know. I got the idea while playing the 3DS StreetPass game, Flower Town (I bought the bundle with all four StreetPass games). Anyway, Garden Wars is nothing like that. It’s more like a simplistic BattleTanx, but with flowers instead of bad-ass tanks.

Garden Wars is a competitive 2 player game. They can shoot each other with seeds and there are various other pick-up items

Anyway, as always, Garden Wars can be downloaded from YoYo Games here:

Poorly Drawn Pterodactyls

Poorly Drawn Pterodactyls

Poorly Drawn Pterodactyls is a shooter in which one or two (poorly drawn) pterodactyls must take down enemy aliens to save the world from total annihilation. It can be played individually or co-op.

I created all of the images (except the background) with Adobe Illustrator. The background is from BackgroundLabs.com and the music is from Jewelbeat.com. Poorly Drawn Pterodactyls is based on the Wingman Sam tutorial from The Game Maker’s Apprentice.

(Hopefully crazy pseudo-feminist “gamer girls” won’t be too offended by my pink pterodactyl with a bow. I find bows to be adorable.)

PANDAmonium!

PANDAmonium!

PANDAmonium is the 5th game I created in Intro to Game Design. It’s about three cute little pandas who are lost in a bamboo forest. The pandas must work together to escape! This is a single-player game in which the player controls three pandas simultaneously to figure out how to help all three panda’s escape without dying or getting trapped. I made this game back in October.

Ningyo hime: Mermaid Princess

Ningyo hime: Mermaid Princess

I just finished finals for this semester, and now I finally have time to upload the rest of the games I made this semester. Ningyo hime: Mermaid Princess is the fourth game I made for Intro to Game Design this past semester using GameMaker 8.1. It is a breakout clone based on the classic fairy tale, The Little Mermaid. I made this game back in October.

The Mermaid Princess has heard tales of mermaids before her time leaving the ocean kingdom to marry princes on the surface. Tired of her life in the sea and wishing more than anything to meet a prince to call her very own, she has stolen a potion from the evil sea witch that will turn her tail into legs if she breathes the surface air.

I went with a sort-of anime-style feel for this game. It can be downloaded from YoYo Games here:

I will be posting the rest of the games I made for Intro to Game Design over the next few days, in order of when they were created. I have five more to go!

First Impression of Pokemon X and Y

Swirlix - Adorable Fairy Type Pokemon

It’s only been two days since Pokemon X and Y were released, but it’s probably already my favorite game in the series (I got Pokemon X, my boyfriend got Y). While staying true to the previous iterations of the series, there are enough new features and changes to give long time fans the same sense of wonder and discovery that they got the first time they set foot in the Kanto region all those years ago.

There seems to be way more different types of wild Pokemon in Kalos than in previous regions. I’ve only earned one gym badge so far (after spending 16 hours in the game already!), and have already had run-ins with 91 different types of Pokemon. There is a nice mixture of brand new Pokemon and Pokemon introduced in previous games (I’m always super excited when I encounter a gen 1 Pokemon in the wild). The sheer amount of Pokemon can be almost overwhelming since there is no way to give each Pokemon captured the attention they deserve, but it also makes the newly implemented online features more engaging and fun. If there were fewer types of Pokemon, new features such as Wonder Trade wouldn’t be very fun at all.

Sylveon - Adorable Fairy-type EeveelutionAt first, I thought the Wonder Trade feature would be lame, since of course most people are going to be trading level 3 Pidgey and Bunnelby, but I’ve already gotten enough cool trades to make the feature well worth using. I got a Riolu, or rather リオル, as he is called since he was originally caught by a Japanese trainer. I was super excited when I got him. That is, until a couple hours later when I got my adorable little イーブイ (Eevee) from another trainer in Japan. Not only was it exciting just to have an Eevee in my party, it was also exciting to know that Eevees are apparently common enough in Kalos that I will be able to easily acquire more (since no one is going to be trading something that they can only get one of). I hope to get enough Eevees to have one of each Eeveelution. I can’t decide if I want a Vaporeon or a Sylveon first! Even when you get something lame in Wonder Trade, it is easy to simply trade it again until you end up with something Awesome.

It’s also fun to see all of the different places where other Pokemon Trainers live. My first Wonder Trade partner was someone from the Cayman Islands. I’ve also met a lot of people from Japan, and quite a few from Chile, France, South Korea, Canada, and various other places. Normally when I play games online, everyone I run into is either from the US or Japan.

Fennekin Pokemon X and Y starterAside from Wonder Trade, trading and battling with friends is now even easier than ever. You don’t have to stop what you’re doing, run to the Pokemon Center, and change out your party Pokemon before connecting with your friend anymore. You simply click on their face on the PSS and go from there. I especially like the fact that you can choose any Pokemon from your computer storage boxes. It makes it convenient to trade as soon as you catch a Pokemon for your friend.

It’s also way easier to level up your Pokemon now, via the experience share item you get early in the game. Now you don’t ever have to send your Caterpie or Weedle into battle to get a Butterfree or Beedrill. The only downside is that my Braixen, Mozilla, is almost level 30 and I haven’t gotten my Cliff Badge yet. He might have to go into storage for a while until I need him again.

Anyway, Pokemon X and Y are pretty awesome so far. My only big complaint is that the over world isn’t in 3D. I was looking forward to an entirely 3D Pokemon game since the 3DS first game out, so it was pretty disappointing when I noticed the 3D turned off after the opening sequence. The battles and inside of caves are still in 3D though, so at least it does use the 3D capabilities somewhat.

Blue Flower FlabebeThe only other small complaint I had was that it wouldn’t let me name my blue Flabébé “Violet,” since apparently “viol” means something offensive in French. I understand that they don’t want people giving Pokemon offensive names and then trading them to children, but come on. Violet is a perfectly nice name for a Pokemon that looks like a flower. I settled on naming it “Lily” instead.

That’s it for now. There are still a lot of features that I haven’t fully explored yet in Pokemon X. If you want to add me to trade or battle, my friend code is 4596-9463-6149. Please comment with your friend code or send me a message on Facebook (my FaceBook link is on the top of my blog’s sidebar) if you’d like to be my 3DS friend!

Crushing Candies

Crushing Candies

I just uploaded my third game, Crushing Candies (no relation at all to Candy Crush. I swear. My game has cute graphics, a plot [kind of], and actual gameplay! The name comes from the fact that you are in danger of being crushed by candies.)

Crushing Candies is about a candy named Mr. Gumball who was imprisoned in a candy dungeon by the evil Fruit Dragon. Mr. Gumball must find a way to escape from the dungeon while avoiding the evil Fruit Dragon’s evil apple minions and avoid being crushed by falling candies that the Fruit Dragon is attempting to drop on him. Will Mr. Gumball escape? Or will he meet his delicious doom?

It’s a simple game, based on the Lazarus game in The Game Maker’s Apprentice. This was my third lab project for my Intro to Game Design Class. Let me know what you think!

If you found my blog because you played my Pug Garden game at Family Fest today, I will be uploading the beta version of it here soon.

Free Content for Indie Developers

If you’re just starting out as an indie developer, you probably don’t have a lot of money to spend on your projects. It can be time consuming to create images and music for your games, so you may want to use artwork or music that is already made (either in the final product or as a place holder until you can create your own). Maybe you simply need some inspiration before you dive in to creating your own artwork. Whatever the case, here are a few websites offering free content that you can use in your indie games:

Free Background Images:
BackgroundLabs.com – I have used backgrounds from BackgroundLabs in a couple of my games so far (I will be uploading Crushing Candies, which uses an ice cream background from this site soon).

Free Vector Images:
VectorJungle.com – This site offers a variety of cute vector images that you can use in your own projects for free.
Vector4Free.com – There are a lot of popup ads, and “sponsored ads,” but there is some good artwork available if you are willing to dig for it. Make sure to check the license for each individual file, however, if you plan on releasing your game commercially. Some are for personal use only.

Free Background Music:
JewelBeat.com – You may have to sift through a lot of files before you find music that is suitable for your project, but I have used music from this site for a few of my game projects already.

As always, make sure your read the licensing agreements on any website from which you intend to use content. Every site has their own rules about use and attribution, and they may change their terms of use at any time.

Cheese Catastrophe

Cheese Catastrophe

I just published my second game design project to YoYo Games. It’s called Cheese Catastrophe. Here’s the description I wrote for this game:

You are a mouse alien from the Mouse Galaxy, and you must use your mouse starship to mine the cheese moons for fresh cheese to sustain your dying civilization.

You see, the inhabitants of the Mouse Galaxy have long ago mined all of the cheese from their own cheese moons, and must now venture to the far reaches of the universe to mine for cheese on far away moons to sustain their civilization. Your people are currently mining cheese moons in the cat galaxy. The cat aliens don’t like what you are doing, as destroying their moons will disrupt the tidal forces on their planets, flooding their cities. The cat aliens hate getting wet, and have sent evil catsteroids to destroy your mouse starship, before you can destroy all of their cheese moons.

I drew the sprites using crayons and scanned them in. I thought it would be cute to make a game that looked like something a child drew by hand. This game was based on the Galactic Mail tutorial in The Game Maker’s Apprentice.

Stay tuned. Next I will upload my third game, Crushing Candies, which is a lot more in depth than my first two games. I’m also working on my fourth Into to Game Design lab project and another project I’m making on my own that will hopefully be finished in time to show at Family Fest at my college.
