Stray: A Short Story

black kitten

“Stray” is a short story about a small black kitten who is abandoned time and time again before finally finding a loving home. A must read for all cat lovers.

Stray: A Short Story

I was brought here at the end of autumn, as the final leaves fell to the ground, the winds got colder, and the nights became the longest that I have ever known. I didn’t know it then, but my life was about to change, forever.

I’ve had many homes throughout my short life before I was brought here. None of them lasted for long. I was always cast out for one reason or another, though I was never quite sure why. I did my best to make them want me. I really did. But it seems that my best just wasn’t good enough for them. At least not for most of them. Not until I met her.

Lillie and Nebby Nendoroid Review

While I usually post collectible and toy reviews on this blog, I decided to publish my most recent Nendoroid review on HobbyLark.com to reach a wider audience. Check out the full review over there!

Pokémon Center Lillie Nendoroid Review

My most recent Nendoroid purchase is Lillie from Pokémon Sun and Moon. I preordered her from the Pokémon Center website back in July, and she finally arrived on New Years Eve (thanks USPS for Sunday delivery!). She came with her Cosmog companion, Nebby, who still refuses to get in the bag.

In addition to Nebby, Lillie came with several accessories. She has the duffle bag that she carries in the games, in which she unsuccessfully attempts to get Nebby to stay. She also has her hat, which is removeable. I also got a Pokédoll accessory with my Lillie Nendoroid because I preordered her from the Pokémon Center website. Collectors who preordered her from Good Smile got a potion bottle accessory instead.

The Many Social Benefits of Playing Video Games

A gamer holding an Xbox 360 controller.

I wrote this article as a research paper for one of my classes at LCCC and recently published it on HubPages because I thought parents of gamers and younger gamers might find it interesting and informative. Since this blog covers video game related topics, I thought it would be useful to share it with my readers here. This article covers how video games may help children to learn valuable social skills. In this article, I discuss how multiplayer and co-operative video games can be particularly useful in helping individuals on the autism spectrum develop social skills.

The Many Social Benefits of Playing Video Games

Introduction

Though video games have become a popular pastime for children and adults alike in recent years, negative stereotypes of gamers still persist. Conventional wisdom suggests that children and adults who spend a lot of their free time playing video games are socially inept and that video games may stunt the social development of children. But is this true? Recent research suggests that video games may have many social benefits and that certain types of games may even help boost social skills in children who struggle socially, such as those on the autism spectrum.

Style Savvy: Styling Star Custom Fashion Designs

Jenny in front of Nybiru Studio

I enjoyed Style Savvy: Fashion Forward more than I expected I would, so of course I had to get Style Savvy: Styling Star as soon as it was released. I was a bit bummed that the new Style Savvy game was only available as a digital download in the US, and that they put it on 3DS instead of Switch, but it is still a worthwhile purchase if you enjoyed the other games in the series.

In this iteration of the game, you can create your own fashion designs and share them through the online Design Centre. I created a few designs to share.

You can download my designs in the Design Centre, which can be accessed through your in-game phone. Once you are in the Design Centre, click “Enter Item ID” and enter the item ID number below for which ever designs you would like.

The Crow’s Cry: A Short Story

A crow flying

The Crow’s Cry is short story of betrayal. The entire village turns on their back on their healer Abigail and her lover Sarah upon accusations of witchcraft by a stranger who recently arrived in their village.

The Crow’s Cry

As the flames crept up her dress and engulfed her bound body, Abigail gazed out into the crowd. So many familiar faces who had once relied on her and her craft now looked upon her with derision and fear. The bishop stood in front of the raised platform, chanting in an ancient language she could not comprehend. Abigail gasped as smoked filled her lungs. She was determined not to let the mob see her wince in pain as the fire rose higher, scorching her skin.

A crow circled above the mob, drawing Abigail’s attention to one face in particular amongst the sea of betrayers. Abigail’s dear friend Mary was there with the others. The words “burn witch!” stained Mary’s lips in an echo of the mob that surrounded the fire. A crow called out as Abigail closed her eyes and let the flames overtake her body. Only weeks ago, this village had regarded her as they would a saint.

Update, and New Sites Coming Soon

Book and Pen

Hi readers. I know I’m bad at keeping this blog updated, but I just wanted to check in in case anyone is wondering what happened to me. I feel like I have out grown this type of blog, I am in the process of creating a new personal website that will serve as a professional portfolio for my writing.

In the meantime, I have recently started writing on HubPages. Check out my articles! My favorite ones I’ve posted so far are Naughty Children Watch Out, Krampus is Coming to Town, Shield-Maidens or Housewives? The Real Role of Viking Women, and Introducing A New Kitten to Your Resident Cats. The rest of my HubPages “Hubs” can be read from my profile. For writers who want to write about many different topics, I think it makes more sense to publish them on sites like HubPages than in a blog (unless you want to have a bunch of separate blogs for different topics, and are willing to actually keep them all updated). While I do get search traffic on this blog for my video game posts, I think I will have more success with most topics on HubPages. It also gives me a place to publish some of my writing to link back to when my portfolio website goes live.

I am also planning on expanding my business, Nýbiru Studio LLC, to provide freelance writing services including copywriting, content writing, blog posts, email marketing and newsletters, product descriptions, and other custom writing services. I may also offer social media services and graphic design.

I will keep this website up since people are still searching for QR codes for Miis and other 3DS game content. I may post more here in the future if I have such things to share.

On a personal note, my husband and I bought a house last December, and I graduated with my Bachelor of Arts in Creative Writing and English last spring. I have accepted a new job as a substitute teacher for this school year, but ultimately I am going to focus on my career as a writer. My goal for 2018 is to build up my freelancing business, continue adding to my portfolio, and hopefully get a regular job as a writer.

Style Savvy: Fortune Teller Room

Style Savvy Fortune Teller's Room address

In addition to clothes, hair, and makeup, Style Savvy: Fashion Forward allows you to do some interior decorating via miniatures. These miniature rooms are then magically converted into real rooms that people in the town can rent from you in Caprice Chalet. I don’t bother with making rooms in Caprice Chalet as often as I play the other features in Style Savvy: Fashion Forward, but I have made several rooms. I have chosen my Fortune Teller room, which includes a handy crystal ball and a toy black cat, as well as a variety of house plants and mystical decorations, as my Streetpass and online showcase room (though so far I haven’t run into anyone who has this game on Streetpass). Please feel free to download my Fortune Teller room and check it out! This room is very popular with the people in my town who want to practice reading fortunes, or who simply want to pay me to play with my toy black kitty.

Style Savvy: Fashion Forward Review

I admit I initially dismissed the Style Savvy series as shovelware, but all the positive reviews piqued my interest enough to download the demo, and I’m glad I did. After playing through the entire demo, I was hooked and immediately went out to buy the full game.

My initial impression of Style Savvy: Fashion Forward was that it reminded me of Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer, except you decorate people instead of homes. The demo version primarily revolves around helping one particular stalker-like customer to copy the look of another character in the game by choosing clothes, styling her hair, and applying makeup to emulate the other character. This plot point is also present in the full game. You can also change your own look and help a variety of other customers in the shop. There is much more to do in the full game, obviously.

N3DS_StyleSavvyFashionForward_01-499x300In this game, you take on the role of a boutique owner. At the beginning of the game, you find yourself transported to a strange town under odd circumstances. You are then put in charge of the town’s fashion boutique and tasked with helping the town’s residents to become more fashionable. In addition to choosing outfits for customers based on what they tell you they are looking for, you are also responsible for choosing what inventory your shop will carry. You get a sample of every item you purchase for your own wardrobe. You can also visit the hair salon and beautician to get a new look for your character or to help give clients makeovers. It is more addicting than it seems after you play it for a while. The story is kind of silly, but it is super fun to play.

There is also an interior decorating mechanic in this game in which you make use of miniatures you collect to decorate rooms that magically appear in a chalet in town. I haven’t played with this feature too much, but it is kind of like a less robust version of Happy Home Designer. You can share a room you’ve decorated via Streetpass.

You can also become a model and a fashion designer, though I haven’t unlocked these features yet.

Certain Amiibo are compatible with this title and allow you to unlock special clothing and accessories based on the specific character. After you scan in your Amiibo, a character that looks a lot like the Mii character that the Amiibo is registered to appears in your shop wearing the Amiibo’s fashion item. I tried one of my husband’s Amiibos, and it turned him into a girl. It was kind of hilarious. There are a few male NPCs, but there doesn’t appear to be a way to get them as customers. All of the clothing items in the shop are for women.

Style Savvy: Fashion Forward is a nice relaxing game with a surprising amount of depth. I highly recommend it if you are a fan of games like Animal Crossing and Nintendogs. A lot of gamers (especially female gamers for some reason) tend to write off all “girly” games, but Style Savvy shows that it is possible for video games to cater to stereotypical feminine interests and still be super fun with solid game play.

Tasty Peach Studios – Halloween 2014 Re-release and More

I’ve posted about Tasty Peach Studios and their awesome plushies before. They have recently hit a patch of bad luck. Their van and containing a lot of equipment and merchandise was stolen while attending a convention in Florida, and to raise extra funds in order to keep their business going, they will be re-releasing two of their retired limited edition Halloween Meowchis. The original black bat and candy corn will be available to preorder starting today. They will also reopen a limited number of preorders for the limited edition white tiger Meowchi that was originally only available at Colossalcon at the same time (there will be an unlimited preorder for him one last time at a later date).

MeowchiCandyCornBat

WhiteTigerMeowchiI’m excited for the black bat and original colored candy corn since I only managed to get he recolored variants. I was lucky enough to get the white tiger at Colossalcon. He was the main reason I wanted to go to Colossalcon this year. He is super cute and definitely worth adding to your collection! Look how fierce he is!

Tasty Peach Studios will also be offering a number of new products for preorder this month. The sea bunnies and mint chocolate chip Nomwhal will be available for preorder starting 8/15, and a Kickstarter for giant Meowchis is scheduled to go live on 8/20. I’m hoping to get the strawberry lemonade sea bunny and both giant Meowchis, depending on the price. The nomwhals and sea bunnies will be permanent store-staples, I believe, while the giant Meowchis will likely only be available from Kickstarter.

I just wanted to help promote this awesome company and help them be able to continue to bring us new kawaii plushies. If you have been debating purchasing a Meowchi or other plush from them, now is the time!

Meet Salem

Salem

We brought our new cat Salem into our life about a month ago. He was a stray who just showed up on our porch one day. After he decided to make our porch his home, I started feeding him because he looked skinny and sad. He was so friendly and cuddly, he didn’t deserve to go hungry. He kept trying to come inside with us whenever we came home, follow us whenever we left and he always head butted me when I came outside to see him. It was like he picked us out to be his new owners, and there was nothing we could do about it. He must have heard that the world’s prettiest female cat lives with us, or maybe that we have premium wet cat food. Cats sure are manipulative!

I took Freyja out on the porch to meet him before we brought him in to make sure they wouldn’t hate each other. She seemed uninterested at first, but Salem rolled over to show her his belly. I think that means he trusted her. At least Freyja didn’t seem to hate him.

SalemLater that day we took him to be scanned for a microchip since he didn’t have a collar. No chip. None of the neighbors knew anything about him and no one put up “lost cat” signs or online listings looking for him. I think someone dumped him off since he didn’t have a microchip or collar, wasn’t neutered, and was skinny and dirty. We thought he was older than Freyja when we decided to adopt him since he’s taller and has a way bigger head, but the vet said he’s between 6 and 12 months old (neither my husband nor I have had cats before Freyja, only dogs, so we aren’t exactly cat experts). I saw a couple of other black cats roaming around at the other end of the block around the same time. Some irresponsible person’s cat probably had kittens that they couldn’t find homes for, and decided to dump them outside. We’re estimating his birthday as Halloween since he’s an adorable black cat.

He’s just a little bit younger than Freyja, but he’s taller and weighs a couple pounds more (now that he gets regular meals!). We kept them completely separated until he got tested for FIV and FeLV and got his first round of shots, and then slowly introduced them afterward. Freyja became interested in him pretty quickly and really wanted to play with him. When we finally allowed them together, she was a bit to rough in her playing and Salem got frightened, but they learned to get along pretty quickly and became great friends within a couple of weeks.

This is the first week we’ve let them be together while we’re at work. It’s the cutest thing ever when they sleep next to each other and groom each other. I was nervous every about introducing a new cat to Freyja after everything I’ve read online about bringing home a new cat, but they already love each other.

Salem

Salem is the most cuddly cat we’ve ever met. He likes to follow us around and sit on the couch while we watch TV. He’s pretty calm for a kitten too. Freyja is definitely the more playful of the two, though Salem can get going when we bring out a wand toy or catnip. Catnip seems to work better on Salem than on Freyja.

We already had him neutered, so there won’t be any little black baby kittens, as adorable as that would be. I’m only saying that here since that’s the first thing every single person we’ve told about him has asked (Freyja was already spayed just before we adopted her).

Black cats are the best! From what I’ve heard from other cat people, black cats are usually the friendliest and most cuddly, but they are the least likely to get adopted. Apparently some people are still superstitious of them. Possibly even worse, some people don’t like black cats (and dogs) because they think they don’t photograph well. These are both really idiotic reasons to overlook a cat or dog. If you’re looking for a new pet, please consider adopting a black kitty of your own! You won’t regret it!
