The Magical History of Garden Gnomes

The Magical History of Garden Gnomes

Garden gnomes are fun and whimsical additions to any garden, but did you know that these figurines have a rich and fascinating history?

The Magical History of Garden Gnomes

If you have a garden or front yard, you are likely familiar with the popular garden ornament known as the “garden gnome.” Though you may have never considered the origins of these whimsical little tchotchkes, these miniature statues have a long and mysterious history. Garden gnomes as we know them today have only been manufactured in the last two centuries, but earlier versions of these garden guardians have been livening up gardens for hundreds of years.

My First School Year as a Substitute Teacher

I started working as a substitute teacher last December, but haven’t written much about that in this blog. In addition to substitute teaching and writing, I am also working as an English as a Second Language teacher remotely now. I will write more about substitute teaching and ESL teaching in the future. For anyone interested in what my experience working as a substitute teacher was like, I wrote the following article:

My First School Year as a Substitute Teacher

After finishing my BA in English and Creative Writing, I was still having trouble finding a job I’d like that was directly related to my degree. The idea of teaching wasn’t even on my radar, but I saw a job listing looking for substitute teachers for districts in my area. The education requirements only called for a bachelor’s degree in any field, and at least some experience with children. Since I did have some experience working with children in a previous position at a museum and as an after-school reading tutor in high school, I thought I might as well apply. This seemed like a job where I could really feel like I’m making a difference in the community and am doing something worthwhile.

Update, and New Sites Coming Soon

Book and Pen

Hi readers. I know I’m bad at keeping this blog updated, but I just wanted to check in in case anyone is wondering what happened to me. I feel like I have out grown this type of blog, I am in the process of creating a new personal website that will serve as a professional portfolio for my writing.

In the meantime, I have recently started writing on HubPages. Check out my articles! My favorite ones I’ve posted so far are Naughty Children Watch Out, Krampus is Coming to Town, Shield-Maidens or Housewives? The Real Role of Viking Women, and Introducing A New Kitten to Your Resident Cats. The rest of my HubPages “Hubs” can be read from my profile. For writers who want to write about many different topics, I think it makes more sense to publish them on sites like HubPages than in a blog (unless you want to have a bunch of separate blogs for different topics, and are willing to actually keep them all updated). While I do get search traffic on this blog for my video game posts, I think I will have more success with most topics on HubPages. It also gives me a place to publish some of my writing to link back to when my portfolio website goes live.

I am also planning on expanding my business, Nýbiru Studio LLC, to provide freelance writing services including copywriting, content writing, blog posts, email marketing and newsletters, product descriptions, and other custom writing services. I may also offer social media services and graphic design.

I will keep this website up since people are still searching for QR codes for Miis and other 3DS game content. I may post more here in the future if I have such things to share.

On a personal note, my husband and I bought a house last December, and I graduated with my Bachelor of Arts in Creative Writing and English last spring. I have accepted a new job as a substitute teacher for this school year, but ultimately I am going to focus on my career as a writer. My goal for 2018 is to build up my freelancing business, continue adding to my portfolio, and hopefully get a regular job as a writer.

I’m Back, Again

Again, I seem to have neglected this blog. I’ve been pretty busy lately. I’m still doing the whole college classes thing. I only have a few classes left, and am switching to half time for the remainder of my degree to give myself more time to work on my coursework as well as my own personal projects.

Aside from school, I’ve been busy making items for my etsy shop, which I hope to launch within the next month or so. I’m making a variety of items including tooth fairy pillows, hair bows, 3DS pouches, and jewelry. I want to have a decent inventory before launching.

The most exciting thing that has been going on in my life recently is that we’ve recently adopted a new cat. He is a black domestic short hair male named Salem. Freyja is super excited to have a playmate. I will post more about him in his own post.

(The features image of me as a Powerpuff Girl is unrelated. I just found it on my phone.)

Don’t Buy Cacti from Home Depot

Angel Cactus in Oddish Planter with R2D2

I decided to get some house plants recently. I got a few cute Pokemon planters from Etsy and wanted some plants to put in them. I decided to go with cacti and succulents since they are supposed to be difficult to kill.

I bought two cacti at Home Depot earlier this week. When I got home and went to re-pot them, I found that one of them was already dead. The Copper King cactus I bought barely  had any roots attached and upon closer inspection, was hollow inside. I’m not sure the employees there ever actually water the plants.

I also realized that the flowers on each of the cacti were fake and glued on. Apparently this is a common practice at big box stores like Home Depot, Lowes, and Walmart. They glue dyed straw flowers to cacti to attract buyers, since people like colorful things. They are taking advantage of people who don’t know a lot about plants. Having random things glued on can’t be very good for the plant either. It’s like if a pet store were to glue a wig onto a dog to make it look fluffier.

I ended up returning the dead cactus and removing the fake flower from the living one. I should have thought to look closer at the plants before I bought them, especially after seeing some other plants in the store that were painted odd and unnatural colors. It just never occurred to me that a well-known store like that would do something so underhanded. Lesson learned. From now on, I will be buying all of my plants from local nurseries.

Here’s the dead Copper King. After researching online, I found that it’s supposed to be green in the middle with coppery brown spines. This one is brownish all the way through. While looking closely through the spines, I noticed a few holes in the body. It was hollow! Also notice the glue under the straw flower.

Here’s the Angel Wing cactus with the fake flower, and then without. After just a little bit of research on these cacti, it is pretty obvious that it’s a fake flower. I managed to get it off with minimal damage by heating up a knife and carefully cutting at the glue. The final bits of glue on the top of the cactus came right off as I pulled on the last bit of glue holding the flower on after cutting through most of the glue. Ignore the R2-D2 measuring cups in the background. Actually, don’t ignore them. They’re awesome!

Have you ever seen an Oddish with a cactus on his head? A leafy plant would have made more sense, but cacti are awesome!

Starbucks Christmas Cups

In light of the Starbucks holiday cup “controversy,” I created two festive cup designs for Starbucks to use next year.

The first one features Odin riding Sleipnir. What could be more Christmasy than the original inspiration for Santa Claus himself? Long before Christians forced Germanic Pagans to convert to their religion, the Germans had their own yule traditions. Odin would lead the Wild Hunt atop Sleipnir, the eight-legged horse, bringing toys to all the good children who left straw and carrots in their boots for Sleipnir. At some point, as Christianity took hold in Europe, Odin became Santa Claus, and Sleipnir became eight reindeer who liked to bully poor Rudolph for being different. It’s the Christian reindeer way.

Next we have a coffee cup featuring Krampus. Krampus is a popular holiday character in Germany and Austria. While Saint Nicholas is distributing gifts to the good children, Krampus is tasked with dealing with the naughty children. Krampus puts all the bad kids in his bag and takes them away. Depending on the particular tradition, he may drown them, eat them, or transport them to hell. I bet children who’ve heard of Krampus are much more well-behaved than those who have only a coal-filled stocking to fear!

I think that my new Starbucks cup designs are just as Christmassy and Christian as the snowflakes that the people complaining about the plain red cups were hoping for!

SNHU

I’ve been pretty busy with schoolwork and finishing up editing a new book that I hope to self-publish before Halloween. I haven’t told many people yet, but I am going back to school via online classes at SNHU now.

I was originally going to get my bachelor’s degree in video game development, which is what my associate degree is in, but I changed my mind and have switched to creative writing. I have a number of reasons for making this switch. I believe that I could combine these two skill sets and become a writer for video games someday, or simply be a freelance writer or independent author while also working on the occasional indie game. I think this is just a better career path for me (not that many people even end up working in the field they majored in anyway!).

I also had significantly more credits that could be applied to the creative writing degree, which is the difference between being in school for just over one more year, or for just over two more years. An extra year would mean significantly more debt.

I will save reviewing SNHU until after I have taken more classes there. I chose SNHU because it is a fully accredited university with an actual campus. Taking online classes is the only way I can keep working while also going to school full-time.

I just wanted to write a quick update, since I haven’t posted anything in a while.

Cleveland Museum of Natural History Wedding

Jen and Hans - Cleveland Museum of Natural History Wedding

I got married about a month ago, on June 27th! The ceremony and reception took place at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History in the dinosaur room.

Our wedding bands
These are our wedding bands. They have triforce and Celtic knot design on the outside and “I choose you!” engraved on the inside. We aren’t dorks at all… Our wedding programs and invitations had a pink Yoshi with a wedding veil and a blue Yoshi with a top hat on them. We got them on Etsy (which is also where I got my wedding dress and veil).

To match the dinosaur theme, I made Pokemon dinosaur cake toppers to sit on the giant cupcake at the top of our cupcake tower. I got a miniature Tyrunt and Amaura from Amazon. I made a top hat and bow tie to make Tyrunt look dapper. I made a veil for Amaura from a sample of the same pink material that my veil was made of and added some adhesive jewels. The mini wedding cake was a last minute addition that we found at the craft store.

Here’s me getting ready. I got pink glasses specifically to match my pink wedding dress and veil, though I ended up liking them better than my other ones, so I’ve switched to wearing them on a daily basis.

wedding5

I had a beautiful bouquet of cascading pink roses! (Sorry my favorite flower is one of the most expensive ones, Hans! But at least I prefer pretty pink stones to plain old diamonds!) Made by Puffer’s Floral.

The room where my bridesmaids and I got ready had fossils on the wall!

The following photos were taken by our photographer, Brian Valentine.

We had dinosaurs and ferns on each table. Our sweetheart table was the Stegosaurus Table, of course!

We left for our honeymoon in Hawaii the following day. I’ll post some photos in a future post!

I Graduated!

I graduated a couple weeks ago! I feel like I should make a blog post about that.

Right now, I’m busy getting ready for my wedding, which is coming up pretty fast. I plan to start working on a new game after I get back from my honeymoon. I’m planning on continuing my education to earn a bachelor’s degree in game programming through an online degree program so that it will be easier to continue to work while going to school.

My game that I was working on during my last semester is available to purchase here: Nybiru.com. I plan on making a few browser games that can be played on my game studio’s website as well as more PC games in the future.

Tomodachi Life Miis!

Miis!

While browsing Miiverse, I came across a post from a Tomodachi Life player showing off all of their Miis. I see a number of familiar faces on this island!

Thank you, Midna, for adding my Miis to your island! I’m glad you enjoy them!

I see my Sailor Venus, Ness, Krampus, Santa Claus, and Mrs. Claus in the screen shot!

Has anyone else used my QR codes? I’d love to see screenshots of my Miis having fun on your island!

If you’d like to follow me on Miiverse, my username is NightDriver2600 and my display name is Nii.

PS: My side-scrolling brawler game (working title: Petal Quest) will be finished soon. If all goes according to plan, it will be released in early May. I will post an announcement here when it is ready. The website for Nýbiru Studio will finally go live around the same time as well.
