Can’t Get Off the Carousel: A Short Story

Can't Get Off the Carousel

This short story is an mashup alternative ending to the short stories No One’s a Mystery by Elizabeth Tallent and Teenage Wasteland by Anne Tyler, based on the song Carousel by Linkin Park. This is the story of two very damaged people; a girl who keeps running between relationships with awful men, and a man who can’t deal with adult responsibility and turns to drugs. This story is a bit different from most of my stories, but I originally wrote this piece for a creative writing assignment in college. I suppose this story could be considered fanfiction of sorts, since the two characters were taken from other works.

Can’t Get Off the Carousel

I still have the diary. So much has changed in my life since Jack gave me the diary two years ago. I’m not even sure if I should still be using it. A diary is meant to be a chronicle of one’s life, but my life has changed so much that, maybe, it can’t even be considered the same life anymore. Perhaps it would make more sense to get rid of this thing and start fresh. But I guess it’s useless to try to destroy the past. The past is what lead us both here to the present, after all.

Donny is still in bed, though it’s nearly three in the afternoon. I didn’t hear him come in last night, but I think it’s safe to say he had a rough night and needs his rest. I don’t know where he goes most nights and he never tells me, but I respect his privacy. A man needs to have a life of his own. We’ve been together for over a year now, but there’s still so much I don’t know about him. But I can’t imagine anyone loving anybody more than I love Donny. And he needs me, just like I need him.

I Got Engaged!

Hey everyone who hasn’t already heard! Hans and I got engaged on Christmas day! This is the kind of thing that’s important to announce on your personal blog, right?

He proposed by putting the ring in a big Pokéball that he took off the Christmas tree and gave it to me as my last Christmas gift!

My ring has a heart-shaped pink sapphire in the center (I may or may not have shown him this ring a couple months ago…). It’s so beautiful! I love it so much!

I think I’m going to have a pink wedding dress too. As with diamond rings, white wedding dresses all kind of look the same to me, and I want something special for my special day. I’m debating trying to make my own dress. I haven’t looked around too terribly much yet, but so far I haven’t seen any dresses that really appeal to me. If I go that route, I might try making a couple regular casual dresses first to practice, since the only clothes I’ve made myself have been cosplay costumes.

We’re planning on getting married this summer sometime, possibly in July. I’m trying to convince him that Legoland is a good place for a honeymoon.

Moving!

Great news: Hans and I are moving to our new apartment this Sunday! Okay, if you are someone we actually care about you already know by now, and are probably getting sick of hearing about it. If you are just some random internet stalker, you now know a new cool story.

After looking at a few places, we found a great one bedroom apartment that we both really liked in an undisclosed location. We viewed the apartment for the second time and got the application Monday, applied Tuesday, were approved Wednesday, and signed the lease Thursday. It has been a busy week. We are now enjoying 2 days of rest (AKA packing) before moving in on Sunday.

Our apartment is in a nice, quiet community of mostly 40-50 year olds, so it won’t be infested with small children or drunk college kids. We won’t be bothered by annoying people our age, unless we decided to invite our friends over! We also hit the neighbor jackpot, as the landlady said that all of our nextdoor neighbors are rarely there during times we’ll be home. The walls are also thick enough that we probably won’t hear them (and vice versa) anyway. Yay not having paper thin walls in our bedroom!

We have all of our furniture covered too! Through the wonders of FaceBook and actually having real-life friends, we’re getting an awesome couch and chair set and a lamp from a good friend. We also got a not-so-awesome, but functional, computer desk from a friend of a friend. Between the two of us, we already had everything else we need.

I can’t wait to finally have our own place! We’re going to have so much fun building couch forts and playing awesome board games like Hungry Hungry Hippos, Candyland, and Pokemon Monopoly all night. (That’s what couples who live together do, right? Build forts and play children’s board games? This is the first time either of us has lived with someone, so we’re new to this!). Since Hans just turned 8 on February 29th, I figured he’d like to have some fun games to play. I need to keep him entertained while I’m kitchening. (Who am I kidding? After a week or two, he probably won’t let me kitchen any more).

Maybe I’ll post pictures of our new place in a future post. Or maybe they’ll just go on FaceBook if I even bother to take photos. We probably won’t get internets until the middle of next week sometime, so I probably won’t post right away unless I go to the college to borrow some internets.

Yay! 🙂
